Mar 6, 2013: Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez died on Tuesday aged 58. Chavez had been diagnosed with terminal cancer for more than a year, undergoing several operations in Cuba, and had not been seen in public for several months.
Vice-President Nicolas Maduro made the announcement on Tuesday, surrounded by political and military leaders. Mr Chavez's body would lie in state until Friday, when his funeral would be held. Seven days of mourning have been declared in his memory.
Mr. Chavez will be remembered for his progressive social and economic initiatives that changed the lives of millions Venezuelans. He was a beloved son, and patriot whose legacy will have a lasting impact on Venezuelans.
Mr. Chavez will be succeeded by the President of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, as a caretaker president until elections are held. Meanwhile, the government had deployed the armed forces and police nationwide to ensure that stability and peace prevail.
